Fire State Aid

Subscribe to Fire Aid and Police Aid updates.
Fire State Aid helps subsidize pension costs for local governments and fire relief associations. A fire department's authorized representatives must submit Form FA-1, Fire State Aid Application, to the Department of Revenue by March 15 to avoid losing part or all of its aid for this year.
Fire State Aid amounts are determined in late September and paid by Oct. 1 each year.

The application is due March 15.
We will notify each municipal clerk or secretary of the independent nonprofit firefighting corporation by email on March 1 if we have not received Form FA-1.
Any fire department that does not submit Form FA-1 by the deadline will have its Fire State Aid reduced by 10% for each week or fraction of a week that the form is late.
The 2023 Legislature made several changes to Fire State Aid.
There are no changes to:
- How aid is calculated, except population figures will be updated annually rather than only after each decennial census
- The deadline for submitting Form FA-1 (March 15)
- When aid is paid (October 1)
The changes to Fire State Aid are as follows:
- There is no longer a 10-day grace period after the March 15 deadline.
- The Property Tax Division is still a required to send a notice when we have not received your form. However, this notice will now be sent on March 1, two weeks before the deadline, rather than after the March 15 deadline.
- The required March 1 notice will be sent by email rather than mail starting in 2024.
- The reduction in aid for late filing is 10% per week or partial week instead of 5%.
- If your form is rejected to make changes or corrections, it must be submitted by March 15 or within 30 days of when it was rejected, whichever is later.
- Form FA-1 will need to be certified solely by the municipal clerk, secretary in the case of an independent nonprofit corporation, or equivalent. Certification by the fire chief is no longer required.
