Credit Card Payments

Federal credit card types and what may be purchased are shown in the table below.

Note: The United States Department of Interior uses a single, integrated card for all purchases. Tax is charged based on the item purchased and follows the same guidelines as the chart above.

The four-digit prefix on the credit card identifies if the card is issued to the federal government. The following prefixes are used on federal credit cards or account numbers:

• Visa – 4486, 4614, 4615, or 4716
• MasterCard – 5565 or 5568
• Voyager (fleet only) – 8699
• Wright Express/MasterCard (fleet only) – 5565

You can identify the different types of federal credit cards by their color and wording.

Purchases made with debit and prepaid cards that are paid directly by the federal government are not taxable. The following prefixes are used on federal debit and prepaid credit cards: 

• MasterCard - 5564, 5568, or 5565
• Visa - 4614

Purchases made with any other charge card by a federal government employee are taxable.
